This short run of Ridge Racer for the original PlayStation takes place on the Intermediate track, as I learn the game's manual transmission. This time around, I’m playing with the Sega Saturn PS2 gamepad — an odd pairing perhaps, but the pad’s D‑pad and shoulder buttons feel surprisingly at home on the PlayStation. Of course, the Saturn gamepad itself can do no wrong with just about any game from this era, so this shouldn't come as a surprise. My goal during this playthrough was simple: stay planted on the throttle and time the downshifts going into corners without lifting off the gas. This approach seems to keep the car gripped to the road while avoiding the unintentional drifting which usually causes me to oversteer and lose all control. Don't get me wrong, drifting is a core mechanic in Ridge Racer, but I haven’t mastered that technique yet, so I thought I'd see how far I could take the game just strictly gripping the turns by swapping gears when going around the corners. And you know what? I was able to eventually beat the game's standard stages (through T.T.) using this approach and it was a lot of fun. This will be a good one to revisit for a follow up video once I get the hang of drifting.
