Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) Test, PTH, Parathyroid Hormone, Intact PTH, Biointact PTH, Parathormone This test measures the amount of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the blood. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone released from the parathyroid glands, that get their name from being located behind the thyroid gland. Parathyroid hormone helps control calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood and plays a crucial role in bone formation and breakdown. PTH is released in response to low calcium levels in the blood and acts to raise them by releasing calcium from stores in the bone and decreasing the loss of calcium in the urine. It also has an indirect effect of increasing calcium absorption in the gut by increasing activated vitamin D production in the kidneys. PTH has an opposite effect on phosphorus and decreased blood phosphorus levels. PTH has different effects on bone turnover depending on the pattern of exposure. Continuous exposure to PTH causes bone to be broken down; however low-dose, intermittent exposure causes new bone to be formed. Normally, it is released in the body in low amounts continuously throughout the day, with short bursts 3-6 times per hour. Levels vary seasonally, and can increase during and following exercise. PTH works in concert with the hormone calcitonin (produced in the thyroid gland), which helps to lower calcium levels when they get too high. Abnormal PTH levels are often the result of disorders or diseases that affect calcium levels, or damage or removal of the parathyroid gland. Because of the effects of PTH on bone formation, synthetic PTH analogs (teriparatide, abaloparatide) are widely used to treat severe osteoporosis in postmenopausal women PTH is ordered to diagnose the cause of abnormal calcium levels. 🏴 This video is sponsored by #seemyresult 📋 seeMyResult™ Electronic Service 🌐 www.seemyresult.com
