Richard Wagner's 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' is a cycle of four operas based on Norse legends and mythology. The third of these operas is 'Siegfried', which is subtitled "Second Day", with the first and third being 'Die Walküre' and 'Götterdämmerung.' In its second act, Siegfried waits for the dragon Fafner in an enchanted forest. Siegfried becomes fascinated by a singing bird, which is played by a flute and glockenspiel. After Siegfried slays the dragon Fafner and has tasted its blood, he is able to understand the bird's singing. The music, titled 'Waldweben', or 'Forest Murmurs', is rather impressionistic in style, decades before the works of Ravel or Debussy. Stradal's piano arrangement of the 'Waldweben' captures the enchanted atmosphere of the forest, with the same twinkling semiquavers used by Wagner in his original piece. Stradal's way of differentiating the birdsong after Siegfried understands it is by playing it in a higher register. pf: Juan Guillermo Vizcarra original audio: • Siegfried: Waldweben (arr. A. Stradal)
