This is my very first model train layout ever. Small, portable micro layouts are perfect for those who are just getting into the hobby or live in apartments/smaller homes without much space for larger layouts. And modules need to be connected to other modules to operate. This is a miniature scene in a nice small package. You can also bring the layout outside for some great photography with a natural skyline in the background. I can’t believe how easy this train layout was to build. It is certainly a conversation starter as it sits on my end table in my living room. These can also be wonderful to have in your office / place of business to show off to clients! This layout is just 24’’ diameter with a pine base. They are sold as tabletops – all precut for you. Three layers of 1 inch insulation foam are used and covered in any regular spackle. After gluing down the Kato Unitrack (11 inch radius), latex paint is used as a first layer and then apply the Woodland Scenics ground cover while the paint is still wet. The paint creates a great adhesive. Spray everything down with Scenic Cement after every application or layer of ground cover. I added Noch Static Grass for the barley field to add detail and depth. Unmask the track and ballast it. I did a terrible job with it so watch another youtuber for ballasting tips instead. Add whatever accessories you desire. This really helps gives life to your train layout and allows you to create your own scenes and stories. I used Woodland Scenics figures, Imex Barn & Silos, and a Model Power house (painted white) and windmill. Some items were custom made or were from ebay sellers. I decided on N scale for my first railroad layout since the size was right for small space. Z scale is also good. I have two other layouts that I am in the stages of planning and building. Thank you for watching and reading this far. I hope this can help you start your own micro layout! Huge shout out to Steve’s Trains on youtube for the inspiration!! His layout pushed me over the edge to start this wonderful hobby. / stevestrains Ron's Trains n Things is also a great resource into starting up in the hobby!
