Modal tunes are well suited to those learning the language of jazz improvisation, with fewer chords to contend with and longer stretches of time on each one. That comes with its own challenges, however, as the improviser cannot rely on ‘making the changes’ as a way to sustain the interest of the listener. This episode is the first of two dealing with the evolution of and approach to improvising on modal harmony, and lays groundwork for improvising on more complicated chord progressions.
