George Parkin Grant (1918-1988) was an Oxford-educated Canadian political philosopher whose major works are a sustained meditation on the modern world. He argued that the classical understanding of justice was imperiled by the contemporary drive to technological mastery of human and nonhuman nature, while the dynamism of modern existence had brought about the "oblivion of eternity" and estranged us from transcendent sources of meaning. Among the thinkers who influenced him were Plato, Friedrich Nietzsche, Leo Strauss, Martin Heidegger, and Simone Weil. His political views combined opposition to liberal individualism with a communitarian ethic, dedication to the common good, and respect for tradition. He has been called a Red Tory. His defense of Canadian nationhood and warnings about a universal and homogeneous state made him an early and prescient opponent of neoliberal globalism.
