There is a growing consensus within Washington that the flurry of recent diplomatic contacts between the United States and China mark a significant step in stabilizing relations between the world’s two greatest economic and military powers. Jake Werner, research fellow at the Quincy Institute, and Michael Beckley, nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), both take issue with this view but draw very different conclusions on the nature of U.S.–China tensions and what that means for U.S. policy. This debate explored contrasting visions of the relationship, a question on which the future of the international order turns. Jessica Tuchman Matthews, distinguished fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, moderated. The discussion took place on Wednesday, October 4th from 1:00-2:00 PM EDT.
