What Does I’m OK, You’re OK Mean? My Definition of I’m OK, You’re OK Which I Think is the Existential Position That Makes Peace Possible A tree isn’t good or bad. Good and bad are human concepts. Things as they come from nature simply are/participate in being. In the same way a human infant simply is. The isness/being of every person is there at birth, but it can be impeded. It is impeded by imposition, by imposing our way of being on a unique other. The natural state of affairs is to allow the isness of the child to unfold, to provide a facilitating environment where that can happen. In the same way I favor an early educational environment that is facilitating, allowing the personality of the child to unfold. I favor choice in education to allow our youth to find their niche, to find opportunities to develop what nature inclines them toward, to develop their gifts. In such an environment that respects the dignity, the nature of our youth, I think people can find direction in life. I think this is the cornerstone to a peaceful world. This is the crux of the I’m OK, You’re OK attitude. This is the attitude of peace. I believe throughout life information is key. That is why I believe in ongoing dialogue to facilitate the flow of information. This is where critical reasoning and thinking as opposed to fixed thought comes into play, too. Anything that obstructs the flow of information – manipulation, propaganda, spin, lies, secrecy – smacks of imposition, a distortion of nature/reality. I’m OK, You’re OK is the basic existential position we are born with. We consolidate it throughout life with respect for the unique nature of each person, each living thing, with ongoing dialogue, with the free flow of information.
