(10 Apr 2020) LEAD IN: Mosul streets look deserted as the lockdown in the Iraqi city continues to stem the spread of the new virus. STORY-LINE: Aerial footage taken by the Associated Press shows empty streets in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Nineveh, the northern governorate, has been on lockdown since March 17. On Tuesday, the Iraqi government extended the lockdown until April 11. It has ordered people to stay home, closing schools, universities and other public areas in a bid to limit the virus outbreak. Nineveh has only registered two confirmed cases of the virus. Iraq has reported 1,202 confirmed cases so far, including 69 deaths, according to stats shared by the ministry of health. For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
