The Crimean Peninsula has been occupied and ruled by multiple forces and entities throughout its history. In 19th century it was the emerging Russian Empire which much controlled Crimea. But its expansionist ruler wanted more. As part of the treaty of Paris, Crimea was returned to Russian control. Ethnic Tatars who had lived there for centuries were ethnically cleansed and replaced by Slavic settlers. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, the peninsula was occupied by White Russian and German troops opposed to the Revolution. In 1921Crimea was incorporated into the Soviet Union.
