Blood Orange a.k.a Dev Hynes (@devhynes), returned to Toronto bringing fans into a show that felt tender, ethereal and very much alive. The English composer, producer and musician has a special touch for creating intimacy in large spaces, and he did just that with back-to-back shows at History, a 2,500-capacity venue. Touring in support of his 2025 release, Essex Honey, Hynes treated fans to a 90-minute set that leaned heavily on new material while dipping into his extensive catalogue for a few delectable deep cuts. Most artists open with a bang to command attention; Hynes captivates with a quiet ease, a different, more delicate kind of command. Opening the show with Thinking Clean, a song that is both lyrically and compositionally weighty, Haynes pulled the crowd straight into their feelings. Throughout the set, he moved fluidly between cello, guitar, keys and synth. While Blood Orange is a solo project, Hynes is a notorious collaborator, and that sense of community was felt in real time with his bandmates. Eva Tolkin and Ian Isiah provided lush harmonies throughout the night and stepped into the spotlight for stirring versions of Best to You and You’re Not Good Enough. Tariq Al-Sabir showcased his range on bass and keys alongside honey-rich vocals, while Dillon Treacy rounded out the band with precise, dynamic drumming. The songs remained centre stage, with Hynes speaking only briefly between them. He acknowledged the long gap since his 2018 Toronto show, and thanked fans for their dedication before diving into the pulsating groove of Sutphin Boulevard. The show travelled across the Blood Orange catalogue, though the newer material held the spotlight. Hynes closed the set with the bouncy Champagne Coast — a track currently seeing a resurgence online — followed by the ethereal I Can Go. Finally, the night wrapped with the acclaimed track The Field, featuring a surprise guest that the crowd went wild for. Tune in to see who!
