Arizona’s rapidly growing population—now over 7.5 million—faces a critical shortage of primary care physicians. The state currently ranks 44th in the nation for primary care doctors per capita, and by 2030, Arizona is projected to need 2,000 more physicians to meet residents’ healthcare needs. Fredric Edward Wondisford, MD, MS, MBA, and Dean of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, joined Arizona Horizon to discuss the bold initiatives the college is undertaking. These include expanding graduate medical education through a partnership with Banner Health, launching new residency and fellowship programs, and introducing a fast-track primary care graduation pathway to get students into the field sooner—especially in underserved communities.
