Note that in present tenses, nouns and verbs form plurals in opposite ways: while nouns add an s to the singular form, verbs remove an s from the singular form. Singular subject and singular verb Plural subject and plural verb The boy loves to play cricket. The boys love to play cricket. (-s) (+s) (+s) (-s) INTERVENING PHRASES AND CLAUSES In some sentences, words come between the subject and the verb. When this happens, find the verb and ask Who or What it is talking about to determine exactly what the subject is. Ignore any intervening words. Also, do not be confused by intervening words ending in -s, such as always and sometimes. If the subject is singular, the -s ending still must appear on a present tense verb. Intervening phrases like in addition to, as well as, and along with that come between the subject and the verb do not change the number of the verb. Subject verb agreement is an exciting topic.
