This is our 99th video documenting our exploration of the model railroading hobby. It is the 30th video for our fourth (HO Scale) layout. In this video, we show our new Athearn model of the EMD SW1500 switching locomotive. The SW1500 was made by EMD as a switching locomotive from 1966 to 1974. While designed for switching, several railroads did use it as a road locomotive for freight runs. It was very popular with over 800 units made during the eight year run. Several are still preserved in museums around the country. The model we chose is one of the general Athearn line, so it is not as detailed as the Genesis line. It is also equipped with a Econami decoder, which is a less expensive decoder that does not offer all of the features of the full line Soundtraxx decoders. With that said, it is a good looking model with enough detail for me to be happy with it and enough features for us to run it with everything we plan on doing with it. I really like the fact that the cab interior is included. While we were at Dibble's, we also picked up a track cleaning car. This is a box car that has an extra assembly underneath with a stone that rubs the track to get any dirt off the tracks. Clean tracks make the trains run better. The rubbing stone does cause extra drag but the SW1500 did not notice it. You can also see the weathered box car that Chris showed in his video on how he weathers models. It does look realistic and he will probably be doing more of that.
