The NIH says there were nearly 80,000 new cases of kidney cancer in 2022. “The good news about these kidney cancers is they are not aggressive. Which means they grow quite slowly, and are unlikely to metastasize or spread elsewhere,” said Independent Interventional Radiologist Dr. David Johnson. If they’re caught early when they’re still small, interventional radiologists can use Cryoablation to treat it. “It gives us a chance to completely treat the tumor without having to put the patient through a big surgery,” said Dr. Johnson. Patients start by getting a CT scan. Doctors use that as a map so they know exactly where the kidney tumor is. The Renal Ablation is minimally invasive. “It’s all done through small little holes in the skin,” said Dr. Johnson. “Once we get those needles placed appropriately within the tumor, we can activate those needles. The needles at the very end can get very very cold, and then that creates a zone of tissue around the needle tip where essentially it will get frostbite and they will kill the tumor.” The procedure is more than 95% effective. It also allows you to maximize the amount of functional kidney tissue you have left. “Which is important to maintain as much of kidney function as you can,” said Dr. Johnson. This is done as an outpatient procedure, where the patient can go home the same day.
