Sophie Braslau sings the Habanera from 'Carmen,' with orchestra conducted by Josef Pasternack, recorded at Camden, New Jersey, on 7 December 1921. Braslau (16 August 1892-22 December 1935) undoubtedly had a voice of the 'once heard, never forgotten' type - 'a dark-hued contralto' as Michael Scott put it. She was born in Manhattan, New York City. Initially intended for a career as a pianist, her vocal talents were discovered, and she ultimately spent the years 1913 to 1920 at the 'Met,' thereafter continuing her career as a concert singer. She died tragically young - aged just 43 - from lung cancer. Sergei Rachmaninoff was one of the pallbearers at her funeral. I transferred this side from Victrola 550.
