You mentioned that you have a 1 year old little girl who has 7 teeth, and it sounds like she's a great eater, but she doesn't chew her food very well, and swallows it quickly, and has had a choking episode. And I'm glad to hear that everything is okay after that. You're wondering what you should do about this, or if she needs to eat softer food. And the answer is yes. Most babies start to get their teeth between 4 and 7 months, and some are late bloomers and don't have many teeth at all by their first birthday. But the desire to eat table food or what's on your plate comes way before they might have the ability to chew it. So they can eat what's on your plate, it just needs to be the right size and the right texture. Let's say for example, you're eating cooked carrots for dinner and your daughter is showing interest in it. Instead of just giving her a piece of cooked carrot, what you should do is mash it up with a fork so it's in a softer consistency, and then feed it to her. It's more manageable, and she can take care of it with the teeth that she's got, and mashing a little bit with her tongue, and it should be fine. There are many things that you can feed her that you eat that are that are like this, again just make sure that it's the right size and the right consistency. There are known foods that we should not feed babies because they're known choking hazards. Any raw fruits and vegetables are a concern, like raw carrots, peas, apples, those sorts of things are obviously very hard, and they can cause choking. Also avoid things with seeds like watermelon with seeds, or cherries with pits, and also nuts, and popcorn, as well as hard candy. Now there are some soft things that can cause choking, like soft cheese, like cheese cubes, hotdogs, grapes, sausages, things like caramel, and even chunks of peanut butter. So again, it all comes down to the right size and the right consistency.
