ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A viewer wanting to know why there are underground tunnels beneath Asheville turned to Ask 13 for answers. After considerable research, we discovered there really are tunnels beneath the city. The owners of Pack's Tavern discovered an entrance into the tunnel network in the basement of the Hayes Hobson building during renovations. Owner Tom Isreal says, "it's believed that these tunnels are connected to other buildings in the city and were used during prohibition to distribute illegal liquor." Our research also uncovered details that were discussed by city officials and a hired city planner in the 1920's to install tunnels or a subway in the city.
