It's 92 km from Sparta, 59 km from Gythio, and 26 km from the impressive underground Cave of Diros. Vathia is 305 km from Athens. Vathis is one of the more impressive traditional Mani villages. Built on a hilltop, just 2 km from the sea, the views from Vathia are breathtaking. The architecture of Vathia is most notable - the village is made of stone tower houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Usually 2 or 3 floors with small windows, the tower houses were used to watch for invaders and pirates and defend against them by throwing scalding oil or water on the would-be attackers.
