This detailed tutorial demonstrates each step involved in building a layered faux effect that in this case, has been used for a floor, but would also lend itself to other craft projects. These could include table tops, cabinet tops and work surfaces. I chose to create this floor as part of a home renovation project, because I am going to sell the house and did not want to spend a lot of money on something that a new owner would not like. This resulted in a very inexpensive floor covering, using materials that I already had in stock. It was an experimental project, but I am so pleased with it, that I am sure that I will create my own bespoke floors again in my new home, probably going into more elaborate detail. It is likely, in order to speed up the process and to ensure an absolutely brush free paint finish, that I will use an airbrush in the future for the base paint layers, borders and protective top layers. I would definitely use filter coffee and basic tea for staining again, but I would probably experiment with other natural stains, to include fruit teas, red wine, and beetroot. If there is anything that you would be frightened to spill on a cream carpet, then it is likely that item will provide a good stain. In this particular project, I have used water-based matt emulsion paint, but natural plant-based stains are also incorporated. I have finished the surface with a hard wearing Ronseal varnish which has proved to be very durable. I would also experiment with yacht varnish which understandably has a good reputation, although I do believe that it might always result in a high-gloss finish which is not always desirable. The tutorial is designed to provide enough information to allow individuals to create their own bespoke flooring project with confidence. Once the technique is understood, any design should be possible.
