Thanks to Sri Eshwar College of Engineering! Precautions 1. The field rheostat of motor should be kept at minimum resistance position. 2. The three phase auto transformer should be kept at minimum position. Procedure 1. Note down the name plate details of the motor and alternator. 2. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram. 3. Close the DPST switch to start the motor and observe the direction of rotation of the motor. 4. Switch OFF the DC supply given to the motor and switch ON the 3φ AC supply by closing the TPST switch. 5. Observe the direction of rotation of the alternator. If the direction of rotation is not same, then interchange any two 3φ supply terminals. 6. Close the DPST switch and start the motor using 3-point starter by moving the handle slowly and completely. 7. If the rated speed is not attained, the resistance in the field rheostat of motor is increased until the motor attains the rated speed of the alternator. 8. Close the TPST switch and apply 20% to 30% of the rated voltage to the stator of the alternator by adjusting the autotransformer. 9. Reduce the motor speed slightly to obtain the maximum oscillation of the pointers. 10. Maximum current, maximum voltage, minimum current and minimum voltages are noted. Note: Here I have not measured the voltage across the field winding. If you want to measure, please connect AC voltmeter across it. You can see the variations in field voltage also. This machine is rotating armature type. Your alternator current deflection should not exceed more than 5A ( 125% of rated current of an alternator).
