In a display of diplomacy, Mr. Abe was requested by Japanese media to shake hands with Mr. Trump. This handshake lasted a rather long 19 seconds and American media mocked Mr. Trump for patting and seemingly yanking Mr. Abe’s hand.However, as a linguistics major and having lived in Japan for almost 10 years, I was much more captivated by the hilarious language gaffe that Mr. Abe made. While the two leaders were shaking away, Japanese photographers requested them to look towards the cameras. Mr. Trump, not understanding Japanese, asked what they had said and Mr. Abe made a novice English grammar mistake which quickly created an awkward and homoerotic vibe. Let’s watch. 週末にかけて、日本の総理大臣の安倍晋三がホワイトハウスのトランプ大統領を訪問した。外交表示に、安倍氏は日本のメディアにトランプ氏と握手することをリクエストされた。この握手は19秒にも及び、アメリカのメディアはトランプ氏が安倍氏の手を軽く叩いて、引っ張っている様に見えることをなじった。しかしながら、専攻が言語学で、日本にほぼ10年住んでいる私は、安倍氏がした大笑いを誘う言語の失態に釘づけになった。お二人のリーダーが握手をしまくっている時に、日本のカメラマン達がカメラの方を見て欲しいと彼らにリクエストした。トランプ氏は日本語が理解できず、彼らが何と言ったのかを尋ね、そして安倍氏は簡単にぎこちなく、同性愛者特有の雰囲気を創り出してしまう様な、初心者レベルの英語文法の間違いをしてしまったのだ。観てみましょう。 Problem: When speaking in Japanese, reporting information using direct speech is perfectly fine. In other words, putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and speaking as if you were them. Standard American English, on the other hand, does not allow this with the exception of very casual and informal speech. Mr. Abe simply repeated the direct words that the photographers used when addressing Mr. Abe and Mr. Trump. Because Mr. Abe used direct speech when speaking English, Mr. Trump followed the straightforward request and stared at Mr. Abe with a lovestruck smile. 誤解原因：日本語で話す時は、直接話法を使って情報を報告することは全く問題がない。言いかえると、自分自身を他者に置き換え、あたかも自分がその他者かの様に話すということ。その一方、標準アメリカ英語は非常にカジュアルでくだけた場合を除いては、直接話法は受け入れられない。安倍氏は単に、日本のカメラマンが安倍氏とトランプ氏にリクエストを投げかけている時の直接的な言葉をそのまま繰り返したのだ。安倍氏が英語で話している時に直接話法を使ったおかげで、トランプ氏は言われたままにリクエストに応え、好色な笑顔で安倍氏をじっとみつめたのだった。 Solution: English most often uses indirect speech. This means that when we English speakers report what someone has said, we report from our own perspective, not from the perspective of another person. The following statement is what Mr. Abe should have said. They are saying to look towards them. 解決法：英語は殆どの場合間接話法を用いる。このことは私達英語のネイティブスピーカーが誰かが言ったことを報告する際には、その発言している誰かの立場からではなく、私達自身の立場から報告するのだ。次の言い回しが安倍氏が言うべきだったものです。彼らは自分達を見てくれと言っています。 If Mr. Abe had used indirect speech when reporting from Japanese into English, Mr. Trump would not have misinterpreted him. But thanks to Mr. Abe, these slapstick moments will live on and remind us to tread more carefully when using English, especially in such momentous and public appearances and events. Moral of the story: study English and when you goof up, laugh about it and swear to never make the same mistake again.
