→ Join me as we once again take a United Hub-Hopper flight between Washington DC and Newark! The Hub-Hopper flights on this particular day were rather, err, close together. One departing at 6:00am (this one) and one departing at 6:05AM (on the plane I just flew in to DC on). I chose the wrong one. You'll see why in a bit. We begin in pitch black at gate C6 and push back. Interestingly enough, last time I flew a red-eye to IAD, then the hub-hopper to EWR, we used the exact same gates in and out of IAD (C11 in and C6 out). A dark taxi to runway 30 and a takeoff run later, we are airborne, heading towards Newark. The first glimpse of sunrise/light is at 24:49. But that is short lived, as we descend into the rain-maker below, practically until we are on approach to EWR's runway 22L. The ceilings were low and visibility was mediocre, but our skilled pilots put this 737 down on Newark turf as smooth as a baby's bottom. That's not where the fun ends. Because Newark is Newark and Newark likes to double up planes in gates and hope that one plane pushes before the other one arrives, we are forced to sit and wait on active taxiways (plural on purpose) for almost 50 MINUTES. I literally saw the 6:05AM flight from Washington DC pull in to a gate before us. I missed nearly the entire 7:30 to 8:00AM bank of outbound flights because of this. I had to cut out the extensive taxi time because that was sooooo boring! But after taking a power nap, then waiting some more, we finally get reassigned a new gate because, what else, the plane that was in our gate went on maintenance delay. But once we were assigned a new gate and new ground crew, we taxied to gate C72, where this hellish flight came to an end.
