I’m Joe Nold, a general surgeon with Wichita Surgical, with a specialization in trauma surgery and critical care. I was born in Wichita, Kansas, and raised in southern California and returned to Wichita in 1988, and I've been in Kansas since then. I always knew I wanted to be a doctor, but I didn't know I wanted to be a surgeon until I got into medical school and saw the amazing things that they can do in the operating room and I wanted to be part of that. So, I was inspired to join Wichita Surgical after seeing the great training that they gave me as a resident, and wanted to carry on that training and join a great group of other surgeons. What I find most rewarding is seeing the big changes we can make in someone's life in a fairly short amount of time, in seeing a problem, diagnosing it, fixing it and then seeing that patient get on with their life. It's nice to see patients that we've operated on, either with elective surgery or with horrible traumatic injuries, and see them six months or a year down the road at the grocery store or somewhere else and see how well they're doing. As a general and trauma surgeon, I couldn't do this by myself. So, between my family, my nurse, a full team of residents and nurse practitioners, I might get a lot of the credit for what gets done, but they're the ones that are doing a lot of the heavy lifting. With a busy surgical practice, it's very important to keep some kind of balance with work and family life. So, I try to take plenty of time for my wife and my kids and also for myself, with lots of running and trying to stay in shape outdoors as much as possible. My family and I have grown up in Wichita and love Wichita. So, we try to spend as much time down around the river, out riding bikes, running and being involved with our church and with civic organizations here.
