Luis Dos Santos is an assistant professor of cardiology in Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. His area of expertise is cardiac disease and arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, in dogs. In this video, he explains how a recent successful cardiac procedure on a dog could help pave the way for better treatments in both dogs and humans with similar conditions. Santos and a talented team from across the country performed a successful cardiac ablation procedure on a dog at Purdue’s Small Animal Hospital. The dog, a boxer named Ketchup, was suffering from arrhythmias. Since Ketchup was not responding well to drugs, a cardiac ablation was performed. Catheters are inserted into the heart, and heat or cold energy is used to block faulty heart signals, restoring a typical heartbeat. The procedure performed on Ketchup was made possible thanks to collaboration between anatomists, radiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists and medical doctors from across the country. Since arrhythmias behave in similar ways in dogs and humans, Santos hopes continued collaboration between veterinarians and medical doctors will improve patient care for people and animals.
