Making experimental artist books has given me the creative energy I’ve been looking for. For a while, I wasn’t sure where to begin, so I decided to go to the amazing PCC Flea to see what might catch my eye. The materials I found there ended up being just what I needed. I didn’t know exactly what I’d make until I laid everything out on my desk, so you’re watching me figuring it out in real time. I ran out of time to use all of my flea market finds, so a follow-up video is definitely needed. Artist books don’t need to follow the traditional codex form. For the first piece, I folded a vintage sewing pattern into an accordion structure, then added a final page incorporating butterfly wings as a magical detail on the dress. The dress pieces reminded me of those paper doll outfit templates. And I love that you get a little surprise when you open the sewing box. For the second book, I experimented with the carousel structure - something I hadn’t tried before. It turned out to be just right: the six matchbooks made up the six panels of the 3D carousel. This structure is related to the tunnel book, which often feature cutouts or windows in their layers. I went with a fire theme, and included a message that’s been an important self-reminder lately.
