I made a record of solo guitar improvisations intended to be listened to as a soundtrack to personal memories. The guitar improvisations were done in-the-moment: the process was to invent a tuning, create an improvisation framework, and record a few takes. The titles of the song on the record are simply personal identifiers connected to my own memories. They are not intrinsic to the music or to the visuals. This one was originally called "Reeds" after a place I know from my own childhood, but here ihas been re-titled because of the footage chosen. Musically I took inspiration Indian classical ragas, minimalist music, and contemporary practitioners of guitar improvisation such as Bill Orcutt. I wanted to set the music to footage of old 8mm movies, as the format has passed from everyday usage, and the very nature of it being a thing of the past connects it to the world of memories. What's more, home movies tend to preserve the type of memories the music is intended to evoke. The footage comes from archive.org's collection, and shows a person's road trip to St. Louis in 1976 to see a David Bowie concert. I don't own this footage- if you do and want to have it removed, please reach out and I will do so. https://archive.org/details/8mmDavidB... https://gregnieuwsma.bandcamp.com/alb...
