Oradea is a city in northwest Romania, split by the Crișul Repede River. It’s known for baroque and art nouveau architecture, remnants of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In this Romania VLOG, we walk around the Oradea old town. Oradea is located in Bihor County, Transylvania, and is divided in half by the Crisul River. It separated from Hungary, officially, only 100 years ago (in 1919) and perhaps because of this influence -and because it is considered the gateway to Western Europe-, the city has always been very prosperous and desired by several empires. What we see today of Oradea is the result of what years of dominations sculpted, molded and remodeled taking as a base the fortified monastery that the king of Hungary Ladislao I sent to build at the beginning of the 11th century and a small citadel grew around it. In this first monastery and origin of the city was the Roman Catholic diocese of Oradea from 1092 and, when the Hungarian king died in 1095, he was buried here. Since then Oradea became a Christian pilgrimage site in the Hungarian kingdom. Ottomans, Austro-Hungarians and the principality of Transylvania have dominated and left their heritage in the city. Many medieval constructions were destroyed, but other baroque and contemporary buildings were built in the middle of the 18th century following the architecture known as "Secession" as well as Art Nouveau architecture. In the last few years, communist buildings were created giving it a very eclectic personality. Besides its historical and cultural center, Oradea is surrounded by the Apuseni Mountains, which gives it a unique natural environment.
