This video was filmed with permission in 2017. Ever wondered what it’s like to fly a Navy jet off the flight deck of an aircraft carrier? In this exclusive jam, join me as I take the controls of the EA-18G Growler aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and taxi through a packed flight for launch. From navigating the tight, high-stress space on the flight deck to the moment the jet blasts off into the sky, you’ll get an insider’s perspective of the intense coordination it takes to launch a mission from one of the busiest places on Earth. I’ll walk you through the Growler’s unique capabilities compared to the Super Hornet and you’ll also hear see first-hand the critical role of the flight directors, how Navy pilots work in unison with them, and the fine-tuned choreography that allows us to safely taxi jets through the crowded, high-pressure environment of the flight deck. Around the 1:46 mark, you see me and the director work together to carefully taxi my aircraft right next to a parked Growler. Ultimately, the pilot is responsible for the aircraft when he or she is behind the controls. Even if the director signals the pilot to taxi into another aircraft or object on the flight deck, the burden of responsibility falls primarily on the pilot. Pilots have a lot of trust in directors and mutual trust is vital for the safety of the pilot and ground crew on a packed flight deck. If there is ever confusion, however, that cannot be resolved via hand signals or the pilot has any concern involving safety, the pilot can transmit on the tower frequency to the "Boss" in the tower. Otherwise, the Navy values radio silence when executing flight operations. Along the way, I’ll break down the roles of the various crew members wearing distinctive flight deck jerseys—each color representing a different responsibility. From the Directors in yellow to the Catapult Safety Observer in green, these are the unsung heroes who ensure that every launch goes smoothly. With voiceover commentary from a seasoned Navy pilot, I’ll give you a first-hand look at what it takes to launch a mission, the small but crucial details that make it all work, and the unique camaraderie that comes with being part of a carrier air wing. Whether you're a military enthusiast or just curious about what happens behind the scenes, this video offers a rare glimpse into the life of a Navy aviator. 🔔 Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more exclusive military aviation content! __________ If you would like to see those hand signals broken down further, check out this video: • Launching T-45C Goshawks for Carrier ...
