They love cool,moist weather and feed at night or on rainy days. They hide in damp places during the day to avoid predators as they are too slow moving. Most species of slugs are generalists feeding on a broad spectrum of organic materials ,including leaves from living plant,lichens,mushrooms and even carrion.Some slugs are predators and eat other slugs, snails and earthworms.Slugs are not picky eaters.They crawl along the ground munching anything digestible from decomposing plants to dead animals. A slug moves by rhythmic waves of muscular contraction on the underside of its foot. It simultaneously secretes a layer of mucus that it travels on, which prevents damage on the foot tissues. The banana slugs are very slow.Banana slugs are one of the slowest animal species. But great grey slug is 4 times faster than banana slug..Slugs can never reach a speed over 0.2 miles per hour.The fastest slug ever recorded was 1.9 miles per hour. When attacked slugs can contract their body.They produce a slippery mucus which acts both as an adhesive and lubricant and enables the slug to adhereto and glide over. Majority of land slugs have two pairs of tentacles on their head. The upper pair is light sensing and has eyespots at he ends, lower pair provides the sense of smell. On the top behind the head is the saddle shaped mantle,and under this are the genital opening and anus. On the right hand side of the mantle is a respiratory opening known as pneumostome.Behind the mantle the part is called tail.Foot the bottom side of slug which is flat. Slugs are very important. They provide food for all sorts of mammals ,birds,insects and they are part of the natural balance. Upset that balance by removing them and we can do a lot of harm.
