"Just A Plain American Girl" Song by Dave Marion Bert Morphy (baritone) accompanied by Gilmore's Band Bert Morphy was called "the man who sings to beat the band" This now-forgotten baritone of the 1890s was known for being loud! According to an article published in Billboard in 1909, Morphy as a youth ran away from England. He landed in Australia, but that did not work out. By the early 1890s he was settled in America. Morphy sometimes performed with Sousa's Band. He provided singing for Fred Hager's Zon-O-Phone company in late 1899. Morphy made a handful of Zon-O-Phone records with “Victor Herbert’s Band,” which was really Hager’s studio band. By the end of the brown wax era, Morphy's recording career was over. The announcement says "New York and Paris," so that would mean late 1897 to 1899. The song was published in 1895, but the cylinder is not as early as that. Just a Plain American Girl. Song by Dave Marion When they talk of foreign beauty that's on the other side, We have no fear for our girls here, all fill our hearts with pride. There's no long title to their name, as you can plainly see, But the American girl, with a twist and twirl, is good enough for me. Just a plain American girl is good enough for me: I don't like the foreign styles they have across the sea; I want no English title, so contented I will he, For just a plain American girl is good enough for me. Now just watch them when out strolling, they're stately and so grand; There is a style about them all that makes you understand. If they're sincere, they're all that's dear-they're happy, gay and free, So the American girl, with a twist And twirl, is good enough for me.
