The local pack of 8 African painted wolves caught a big male impala right next to the game viewer full of tourists! African wild dogs or painted wolves are known to eat their prey alive, this is done to ensure they get the most amount of food in the shortest time possible. African wild dogs are too small to be able to defend their prey from other predators such as lions and hyena so they eat their prey alive to lessen their time feeding. The African wild dogs look after one another, if they have a meal and there are members of the pack at the den the returning pack individuals will regurgitate meat for those that stayed behind. Lycaon pictus translates to painted wolf, this is why many are using this name interchangeably with African Wild Dog and other common names.
