Natives not good for gardens only prairies:Tall Goldenrod (Solidago altissima)Stiff Goldenrod (Oligoneuron rigidum) Goldenrod supports a wide variety of insects, acting as a crucial food source for numerous species including bees (like specialist bees, bumblebees, and solitary wasps), butterflies (such as monarchs), moths (including the Ailanthus Webworm Moth), beetles (like the soldier beetle), and various types of flies (including syrphid flies and goldenrod gall flies). Many of these insects feed on the plant's nectar and pollen, while other species, such as caterpillars of brown-hooded owlet moths, use goldenrod as a host plant for their larvae. On many sites Goldenrods can be prolific self seeders. It does well in a broad range of soil conditions so on small sites or in home garden/landscapes removal of the seed head before the seed is ripe is preferable to weeding unwanted seedlings.Cultivars:Fireworks Goldenrod - good for gardensFrom American Meadows: “Late season gardens and meadows will glow with ‘Fireworks’ Goldenrod, featuring arching stems of luminous yellow blooms to nourish pollinators at the end of the growing season. This native cultivar is dinner and a show for bees and butterflies. ‘Fireworks’ Goldenrod is a well-behaved gentle spreader for gardens and meadows. When it’s not in bloom, this deep green, bushy plant provides year-round interest.” #goldenrod #nativeplants #prairie #plants #escapetotheprairie
