The Embassy of Brazil in Zagreb was pleased to support the realization of the concert “Tropical Mozart”, held in partnership with the Festival Heritage of Christ's Passion, in celebration of the anniversary of 30 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Croatia, as well as 200 years of the independence of Brazil, on 7 September 1822. The main piece of the concert is a 18th-century Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation for the famous Requiem, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which has recently been discovered by Ricardo Bernardes together with a collection of musical manuscripts stored in the Cathedral of Evora, in Portugal. As part of a distinguishing tradition of the musical environment in 18th century Brazil and Portugal, Mozart’s requiem was then adapted to be played by an ensemble of musicians instead of a full orchestra. The combination of voices are accompanied only by a handful of instruments creating a basso continuo: a cello, two bassoons, a double bass and an organ. In 1819, Father José Maurício Nunes Garcia (Rio de Janeiro 1767 - 1830) conducted Mozart's Requiem in the Court of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves (1815-1822), in Rio de Janeiro. According to available records, this may have been the first time that a Mozart concert was held in the Southern hemisphere of the globe.
