Arrábida Natural Park has hiking trails with breathtaking scenic views of the forested hills and beaches. Drive along the Estrada de Escarpa (the N379) from the hilltop of Palmela to the beach town of Sesimbra for spectacular scenery. The Fort of Saint Philip (Forte de São Filipe) overlooks the Sado Estuary and Troia Peninsula. The fort was built in the 16th century to protect against invading forces. Let’s explore the city center, Setúbal’s Main Square (Praça do Bocage), Livramento Market (Fresh Fish and Produce) open Tuesday - Sunday 7:30 - 14:00, and Bonfim Park (Parque do Bonfim). Setúbal is a working-class city with more of an industrial vibe than a tourist hub. The Monastery of Jesus (Mosteiro de Jesus), the church was built in 1491 in the Manueline style of Portuguese architecture. Considered an architectural wonder in Setúbal with twisted rope-shaped columns made of beige Arrábida marble. Behind the altar, there are tiles with geometric motifs creating an interesting contrast with the curved ribs situated on the ceiling. Setúbal offers so much for outdoor enthusiasts; views of the Serra da Arrábida mountains, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Troia Peninsula. Arrábida Natural Park has a wide variety of birding places. Flamingos live in the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve. Hop aboard a ferry for a short commute to Troia. Hopefully, spot dolphins frolicking in the water along the way. A pod of about 30 Bottlenose Dolphins lives in the Sado Estuary all year. You can visit CIRES, an Interpretive Center, for interactive displays about this dolphin pod. Admission is free and it is open daily from 9:30 - 20:00. Troia Peninsula has some of the most alluring beaches in Portugal, boasting a 12 km (8 mi) stretch of golden sand and clear water.
