Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke, owners of Madcap Cottage, give their tips on how to refresh a room. INSTAGRAM: / thehomedotcom ELLEN GEFEN: @ellengefen Video Production By Gefen Productions: http://gefenproductions.com/webdev/ You know Madcap Cottage truly believes that that rooms should evolve. It should be ever changing. But everything that we create, whether it's lighting and accessories, wallpaper or rugs. They're really timeless. You know, I think that everything we do is on trend. It's never trendy. It's on trend. So everything we're doing, we're creating with that. We're, um, that we're creating, really feels like heirlooms. They feel special. They're going to be terrific today and tomorrow. So one of the things that we've done to help people refresh is with port 68, we've created a pattern lampshade program. So you can buy the lampshade separate and you can add them to a lamp you already own. I mean, lamp changing your lampshade is a really great way to kind of re-energize your room and a pattern lampshade gives it a personality that you're not going to get from a white or a beige or cream. And so I think it's about, you can do small changes, you can add a new rug. Uh, you can wallpaper a wall. So we have a wallpaper line with York that again coordinates back to all of our fabric patterns. And, and I think that, you know, small changes help a room evolve and it's like, you know, changing your wardrobe, buying new glasses, any of those things. It all just kind of refreshes, you know, at madcap cottage we're interior designers first and foremost, and we're never cleaning out our clients with current furnishings. It's all about taking what they have, re-purposing, recycling it, taking those pieces that they're not using it and making them fresh. And as John said, it's really about the small changes that can really take a, a nice room and make it a knockout. I think one thing that madcap cottage does when we are designing rooms for clients is we say there has to be some kind of pattern in a room. And pattern doesn't have to be a bold floral. It doesn't have to be a stripe. It can be a texture. There are all kinds of wonderful textured, um, natural fiber rugs out there. We have some in our collection for Momeni, um, that can really, you know, just bring that added layer to a room. You know, I think a common mistake with consumers is looking at scale and that idea that the different heights in a room, that room should not be completely horizontal, that there should be higher pieces, lower pieces, things don't have to be oversized. That intimacy of scale and really looking at the proportions in a room. Layering is such a tenant of the madcap cottage brand and we love that idea that you can take vintage and modern pieces and pair them together. Well, let's say you have a a beige room and you want to add some layering started with the pillows. I mean these are kind of very easy tricks of the trade. Switch out your pillows, you're comfortable with that. Then maybe switch out your curtain panels, switch out a lampshade, buy a new lamp. I think what we've discovered in working with clients is that everybody has this need and the this want to bring pattern and color into their world, but they're, they're scared to do it because they think it has to be big and it has to be bold. And so we really try to start small and kind of help them grow into the idea. And what we've discovered over the years is that they're all willing to embrace it. They don't necessarily want beige, and they want their home to be happy. They want it to reflect them and they want it to be special.
