This isn’t to cast shade on Bob/RetroRGB. I know exactly why he was misinformed about the UperGrafx UGX-02 and it’s not really his fault. I’m sure he would agree that it’s important to get the right information out there for people considering one. So, why did Bob think this? First, the English side of the UperGrafx website is very out-of-date compared to the Japanese side. It just isn’t marketed toward Westerners (yet?). As a result Bob ended up with an old version of the PC software that did not support the internal system card or playing card ROMs from SD. Without the right PC software he had no way to put them on his SD card, which is a strong argument for changing to a drag-and-drop system like he calls for (good call!). Second, the Japanese side of the site is always significantly behind compared their Twitter updates (@UperGrafx). New features are always shared with and tested by Twitter followers before they end up on the website weeks or months later. There had already been another huge firmware update Bob missed which added the ability to boot your selection from the game list without powering off or backing out, boot directly to the game list, and gets rid of the “Block” thing that confused him. FYI: “Block” is just a set of 100 titles since the menu only supports 00-99. “Block” would switch to another set of 100... and another and another and another... 100x100 total titles. The February update got rid of this and made it switch blocks automatically when you moved through the list and passed the 99th title in the previous block. Third, I don't think Bob even had a UGX-02. It looks like one of the bastardized units cobbled together by the UperGrafx creators... a hackish combination of the UGX-01 and UGX-02 without the full feature set of the UGX-02. Originally, the UGX-01 was only sold as a video adapter... like when GameTechUS first reviewed one in 2016. It wasn’t sold as an ODE (Optical Drive Emulator) or flashcart. That’s why Jason never even mentioned the SD slot in his video. The creator always intended to add ODE and flashcart features but I don’t think it was ever promised until UGX-02. It turns out that UGX-01 simply doesn’t have enough RAM. You could pay a small fee to get your UGX-01 officially converted to a UGX-02 by adding more internal RAM, but it looks like the latest firmware adds flashcart support to UGX-01 even without that. From what I see, the new flashcart function only works with smaller games on UGX-01 due to less RAM. Anyway, Bob’s “behind-the-scenes” video hints that this may not have been a UGX-01 or UGX-02, so it sounds like he may have had a UGX-01 with limited ODE functionality enabled (still requires real system card and power cycle?). The firmware Bob had was the first one to support card ROMs and system cards from SD but it still might not have worked for him even with the right PC software. In short, what he was using may not reflect the capabilities of either device as they were available. Even so, it looks to me as if it was operating like a UGX-02 ...and like he just needed to update the February FW update and PC software to address more than half of his concerns. ;) On a side note, please check out Elrinth's UperGrafx Companion app if you have an UperGrafx! https://github.com/Elrinth/UperGrafX-... It does a ton of stuff that the original UperGrafx Control Panel app (ikaebi.exe) always should have done. For example, it can region-fix your TurboGrafx-16 ROMs to run on Japanese systems. You can mass-convert them in one go! If you have Daemon-Tools installed it automates converting BIN/CUE CD images into the CD Manipulator format UperGrafx exclusively supports... such as the BIN/CUE files from the popular ReDump set. Previously I had to mount them in Daemon-Tools, then re-rip manually. I always used CloneCD which means I had to manually edit and rename the CCD files to match the CDM files -but no more! UGX Companion also creates CDM files from CCD files en masse. Heck, if you have the TruRip set (CloneCD format) you may as well just convert all those and save a lot of time since it has a lot that the ReDump set is missing.
