Baia Mare is the capital of Maramureș County. It is located on the banks of the Săsar River, surrounded by mountains in northwestern Romania. Baia Mare means "Great Mine" in Romanian, "Nagybánya" in Hungarian, and "Frauenbach" or "Neustadt" in German. It has a population of approximately 150,000. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1920, following the dissolution of that empire and the signing of the Treaty of Trianon, it became part of Romania. Between 1940 and 1944, due to World War II, it again became part of Hungary.
