Six of seven hides required corners to source. If you cut corners in this search — and Murphy did — you miss hides. But the bigger challenge wasn't the corners. It was staying calm while Murphy worked through puzzles that took a little time. No real convergence, just some unclear lines. Mile-High Golden Retriever Club, Aurora, Colorado. Judge Sally Dunphy. February 28, 2026. Seven hides. Nine minutes. What I was thinking and noticed during and after watching this back: *The coat hook hide pushed enough of a plume to be picked up early, but the odor was collecting in the corners — Murphy had to work into them to finalize source. *The blue napkin dispenser was sitting in a corner, with odor pooling tightly against the wall. Murphy had to push all the way into the corner to get to source. *The corner of the building near the green chair stack was being warmed by the sun on the outside wall, causing odor to rise and spread. Murphy cut the corner early and walked right past it. Sound familiar? I made a mental note to come back — and we did. Had we not, we would have missed that hide. When we came back, it took a little time to figure it out and find a line. There was even a moment when I thought it might be a high hide and had to be patient. *The center table was the outlier to the corner rule — odor was spreading across the slick tile floor and collecting on surrounding tables. Murphy had his nose almost on it early, but needed to work the surrounding tables and floor before going back and committing to the alert. There was a moment watching him sniff the floor where I just had to stay out of it and let him gather information and trust he was working odor. Of course, you saw he also found a treat after he finished that one. *Outside, the picnic table was a solid line to source from the door. *The crack hide was spreading wide, catching in the grass and almost back to the building. Murphy checked inside and outside corners to source it. When he started sniffing the grass, I'll be honest — I was nervous. Murphy has a habit of stopping to pee during practice, and it was really hard to stay calm and trust that he was working odor and not about to embarrass both of us. At 5:22, watch Murphy's head movement carefully — he goes hard right, then follows a line back left along the building to the third exterior hide. I think there may have been some convergence between that hide and the picnic table at that moment. And then he caught the line of the one on the side of the building and followed it right to source. At the end of the search, I went back along the downwind perimeter in case there was another hide in the picnic table area. When I was there earlier, it looked like Murphy was covering a lot of ground sorting the crack hide, and I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed another exterior hide. When I sent him back, he alerted on the crack again — for me, that's a good sign there isn't another hide nearby, but I also know that in convergence, a dog can get pulled back into a known hide. When I kept him searching he went flat, which was more evidence there was likely nothing else in that area. So, feeling confident we covered the interior already, and now the exterior, I called finish. And then we celebrated Detective Q#14. Want more scent work? Check out my podcast — Alert!
