Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 9 - Hidden Gem… This is Benitoite, a breath-taking blue stone that was discovered close to the waters of the San Benito River in California. There are some reports that say it has also been found in smaller quantities in Japan and Arkansas, but the quality just isn’t the same. One of the amazing qualities of this stone is what happens when you put it under UV light, the color is spellbinding. They were first discovered in 1907 and it’s the official state gem of California. 8 - Diamonds are forever… And so is Grandiderite, discovered by French mineralologist Alfred Lacroix in 1902. He made the discovery in Madagascar and named it after Alfred Grandidier, a French explorer who was deemed an expert on Madagascan natural history. Similar stones have been found in other parts of the world, but the gem quality is only found in the stones from Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Most of the stones are translucent, but the extremely rare ones are transparent. Initially the stones were thought to a type of serendibite, until they found the transparent ones. The first stones found were said to have been sold for an undisclosed amount of money. 7 - Pretty in Pink… There are over 4,000 minerals on earth that we know of, and many of them we’ll probably never see in our lifetime. Here’s one that was discovered in the mid 1960’s, but was only recognized as a mineral in 1987. It was only in 2003 that they were described for the first time, and up until now – not much is known about this rare stone that was discovered in the Poudrette quarry of Mont Saint Hilaire, Quebec. 6 - Diamonds are forever… And so are these exquisite Red Beryl Emerald’s, but ensure you have enough cash to purchase one as it will set you back $10,000.00 per carat and they’re usually not even as big as a carat. Found in the Thomas Range and the Wah Wah Mountains of Utah, the Red Beryl is so rare because it only forms thanks to a unique geochemical environment. For every 150,000 diamonds found, only one of these are discovered. 5 - Off Colour… We’ve really gone off the beaten track with the mineral and gems on our list today, so let’s go back to basics and bring in the diamond… but not just the regular diamonds, let’s have a look at some different colored ones! This is in order of rarity: yellow, brown, colorless, blue, green, black, pink, orange, purple and red. The largest red diamond ever found is the Moussaieff Red, which weighs 5.11 carats and is worth $20 million! 4 - Dog Garnet… We’ve already featured the exquisite green garnet a little earlier, which is obviously extremely rare and up until the mid-90’s, we were used to seeing them in all other colors, mainly red mind you, but never, ever blue! But come the 90’s, that changed when blue garnets were discovered in Madagascar. They’ve since been unearthed in Russia, Turkey and the USA. Their value has reached highs of $1.5 million per carat. What makes the stone more beautiful is that changes color, so in daylight it’s a soft blue-green color and under incandescent light, a vivid purple. A 4.2 carat blue garnet sold in 2003 for $6.8 million! 3 - Diamond in the rough.... Here are a few more examples of diamonds that sold for millions due to their rarity. The Oppenheimer Blue diamond, the largest Vivid blue to ever be auctioned off, fetched $57.5 million and weighed 14.62 carats. Then there was the Pink Star diamond which fetched a record-breaking $71.2 million for 59.6 carats. 2 - Going Green… Now this is the type of green we’d all like to go, if only we could afford it! Jadeite will set you back around $3 million a carat, and it’s officially one of the rarest precious stones you’ll come across. Not to be confused with jade though, which comes from China, Jadeite is from Burma and the quality is in a different league. It does come in different colors, but the green is the most sought after and the most expensive. Lavender is the next most popular and pricy! 1...
