DISCOVER THE FAMOUS 1964 CARILLON DU MONT DES ARTS Let’s together discover more about the famous clock in Belgium particularly at the heart of the city of Brussels called Carillon du Mont des Arts. This clock is a bronze clockwork figure that stands 2.8 meter high and was built in 1964 by the Belgian architect Jules Ghobert during the construction of Mont des Arts. THE TWELVE FIGURINES On the starshaped clock, every hour is represented by a painted figurine, and each figurine represents a historical figure in Brussels. In clockwise and chronological order, you will see: a Galois, Godefroid of Bouillon, Jan Van Artvevelde, Philip the Good, Charles Quint, Pierre Paul Rubens, the Count of Egmont, a soldier in 1790, Charlier a la Jambe de Bois, a tam-tam player, a soldier from WWI, and a worker. 1. A Galois 2. Godefroid de Bouillon, 11th century, Duke of Basse-Lotharingie (Limbourg and Brabant). 3. Jacques Van Artvevelde, 13-14th centuries, and symbol of the foreign national resistance. 4. Philip the Good, Duke of Brabant in the 15th century. He resides at the Coudenberg. 5. Charles Quint, 16th century. 6. Pierre Paul Rubens, Flemish baroque painter in the 16-17th centuries 7. The Count of Egmont, Charles Quint’s nephew and government worker in the former Low Countries. He was decapitated on the Grand Place in Brussels. 8. A fighter in 1790, Brabant revolution against the Austrian Netherlands 9. Charlier à la Jambe de Bois, Jean-Joseph Charlier from Liege played a central role during the Belgian revolution of 1830. 10. The tam-tam player, in reference to the Congo colony. 11. A soldier from 1914-18 12. A worker T HE BELLS AND THE MELODY The carillon melodies are played by 24 bells founded by Paccard in 1964. However, the rest of the bells are placed behind the figurines. Beneath the clock, 11 of them are visible. Nine represent the Belgian provinces namely; 1. HAINAUT HENEGOUWEN 2. ANTWERPEN ANVERS 3. SCIENCES WETENSCHAPPEN 4. NAMUR NAMEN 5. BRABANT 6. LIMBOURG LIMBURG 7. KUNSTEN ARTS 8. FLANDRE VLAANDEREN 9. LUIK LIEGE The above names can be identified by their coat of arms engraved in bronze. Two others symbolize the sciences and the arts. Furthermore, the carillon plays two folkloric tunes. One is by Gretry, “Ou peut-on etre mieux”. The second is a Flemish melody by Peter Benoit, “Beiaardlied”. The carillon alternates the song each hour and by 30 minutes.
