Pai is a small town in northern Thailand’s Mae Hong Son Province. It began centuries ago as a small settlement and developed slowly. In the early 1900s, Pai became a modest trading post between China and Thailand, helping it grow over time. Located about 135 kilometers from Chiang Mai, Pai sits in a valley surrounded by mountains and rivers. Once mainly home to Shan people and hill tribes, Pai’s population diversified. By 2020, Pai and its district had around 3,000 residents. Route 1095, completed in the late 20th century, made Pai far more accessible. With 762 sharp curves, the road between Chiang Mai and Pai became famous among travelers seeking adventure in northern Thailand’s rural landscapes. In the 1980s, backpackers found Pai’s quiet charm, affordable lifestyle, and cool weather. Tourism grew rapidly after 2000, with guesthouses and cafes transforming the town. By 2010, tourism had replaced agriculture as Pai’s economic focus. With more visitors, local authorities promoted eco-tourism and cultural preservation efforts in the 2010s. Pai’s elevation of about 600 meters brings cooler temperatures, making it popular among those seeking nature and relaxation. As of 2023, Pai continues to evolve. It hosts a mix of long-term residents, artists, and farmers.
