(2 Aug 2000) Eng/Indonesian XFA Indonesian authorities have promised to tighten security at foreign embassies following a car bomb at the Philippine ambassador's home which killed two and injured dozens more. The bomb, exploded as Ambassador Leonides Caday's car was pulling into his residence in Jakarta. The blast scattered shrapnel and debris for hundreds of yards in a neighbourhood of diplomatic residences and government offices just a block from the homes of the U-S ambassador and Indonesia's vice president. No one has yet claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack. Ambassador Caday is now out of danger after a three-hour operation in which metal pins were inserted to repair five leg fractures. He also suffered burns and bruises on his head and hand. Meanwhile campaigners have taken to the streets for an anti-terrorist demonstration and politicians have been visiting the Philippine Ambassador in hospital. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Whatever the motivation is that we should not allow this kind of activity, violence in Indonesia - not in Jakarta, not in Maluku, not in Aceh, not in Papua, not anywhere because I think let's give democracy a chance. We have to defend democracy."
