Delivered on November 7, 2025, Joel S. Wit discusses his new book, "Fallout: The Inside Story of America’s Failure to Disarm North Korea". Wit examines why U.S. efforts to halt North Korea’s nuclear ambitions have repeatedly fallen short, reconstructing nearly four decades of high-stakes negotiations and secret diplomatic exchanges. Based on more than 300 interviews with policymakers in Washington, Beijing, Seoul, and Pyongyang, the book uncovers the pressures, missteps, and missed opportunities that shaped U.S.–DPRK nuclear diplomacy. Wit challenges common narratives by presenting Kim Jong Un not as irrational, but as a calculated strategist using nuclear escalation as leverage. He also argues that policy shifts under the Obama and Trump administrations accelerated North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, transforming the North into a direct threat to every major U.S. city. Speaker: Joel S. Wit, Distinguished Fellow in Asian and Security Studies, The Stimson Center Moderator: Barbara Demick, journalist and author of "Nothing to Envy" (2009) and "Daughters of the Bamboo Grove" (2025) Co-sponsored by the Center for Korean Research and the Weatherhead East Asian Institute.
