Departmental Seminar: 26/2/25 Abstract This seminar employs Ubuntu philosophy to challenge Western neoliberal frameworks that split higher education into public versus private goods. Drawing on Zimbabwean examples, it argues that Ubuntu dissolves this dichotomy by prioritising collective and individual well-being. By acknowledging indigenous education systems and dismantling colonial remnants, higher education can be reimagined as equitable and holistic. Ultimately, Ubuntu fosters shared empowerment and global equity, transforming higher education into a unified pursuit of societal flourishing. Bio Dr Oliver Mutanga is an Inclusive Development scholar. He is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan, as well as a Research Associate at the University of South Africa. Oliver’s research focuses on disability, education, health, and indigenous/native studies.
