On Tuesday, January 14th, 2025, the Reading and Northern Railroad received a special delivery of passenger rail equipment from the Shamokin Valley Railroad. This occurred at NORA, the exchange point in Mount Carmel, PA between the Reading and Northern and Shamokin Valley. The delivery consisted of seven rail cars from Penn Valley Railroad, LLC. Recently they have run on the North Shore Railroad's system for special events and seasonal trips. The first car in the consist is a generator car (baggage car), followed by a crew car, dining car, parlor car, and three ex-Delaware Lackawana and Western Railroad Coaches. The parlor car will join R&N’s passenger fleet as a Crown Class Coach, while the three DL&W coaches will become standard coaches, matching the existing 300 series of coaches that have been on the railroad since the 1980s. Since the delivery took place in Mount Carmel, the consist, traveling as train MCNQ, would traverse the entirety of the Mahanoy and Shamokin Branch or M&S branch of the railroad, with the CEO and founder Andy Muller Jr. at the throttle. With this branch serving primarily for freight, the passenger consist proved to be a rare sight. Once the train arrived at East Mahanoy Jct., which is where the M&S branch meets the mainline, MCNQ traveled through the junction and then shoved the consist to a wye about 1 mile up the line at Haucks. The train would then be turned to face forward, allowing it to travel to Nesqueoning to be put on display at the Nesquehoning Regional Railroad Station for a short time before work begins to put the cars into service. Additionally, we run into some freight action at East Mahanoy Jct., with the SDQA or "Shenandoah Job" holding for the northbound NRFF or North Reading Fast Freight. After the NRFF passes, the SDQA resumes its southern travel to Tamaqua, allowing for the MCNQ to arrive and head to Haucks. With that being said, please enjoy this unique equipment move down the M&S branch!
