Titanic, Southampton Remembers tells untold stories to mark the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic To mark the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in April 2012, the BBC will broadcast a special range of programmes on TV, radio and online, exploring the people, history craftsmanship and legends surrounding the events of that fateful night. As part of the special programmes to be broadcast, Titanic, Southampton Remembers on BBC One (South) tells the untold stories of the fateful night that resulted in a huge loss of lives. Around 550 victims, well over a third of the total deaths in the disaster, lived in the Southampton port. The city's streets had numerous victims including men who were husbands, fathers and sons, all Titanic crew members who obeyed the "women and children first" as the famous White Star liner slowly sank in 1912. For many it was a symbol of the age, and the hubris of those who built it. For the people of Southampton, this tragedy resulted in the largest peacetime loss of life the city has ever experienced. Titanic, Southampton Remembers tells the stories not heard before, of the killer who escaped the hangman's noose only to perish in the north Atlantic, the lookout who always felt guilty and the matron who wouldn't leave her post. The documentary is presented by award winning actor Bernard Hill, who played Titanic's Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 James Cameron's epic Oscar winning film Titanic. Also in the programme is former Bond girl Madeline Smith, who features in the drama reconstructions about the effect on Southampton of the sinking of the ship.
