The most underrated city in Spain - Lugo

When people think of Spain, the first cities that come to mind are probably Madrid or Barcelona, right? I thought so too—until I came to the north for my studies and discovered a whole new side of Spain. This time, my friends and I chose Blablacar to travel from Vigo to Lugo. The ride took just two hours, was budget-friendly, and gave us the chance to experience local travel firsthand. 🏰 The Roman Walls – The World's Only Fully Preserved Roman Wall As soon as we arrived, the first thing that caught my eye was Lugo’s Roman Wall! Built in the 3rd–4th century AD, this wall stretches 2 kilometers and features ten gates, five of which are original from Roman times. Standing beneath it, I couldn’t help but feel like I had stepped into the world of Attack on Titan! The wall was originally constructed to protect a sacred forest, using strong defensive materials and forming a semi-circular cubic structure. Walking along the top, you can see the historic old town and cathedral on one side and the modern cityscape on the other. In 2000, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it Lugo’s most significant historical landmark. 🏨 Where We Stayed – Hostal Mar de Plata Perfect location—our balcony window opened directly to a view of the Roman Wall! It’s just a short walk to the city center, and for only €45 per night for a double room, the value was unbeatable. The staff was friendly, offering us maps and food recommendations. The room was clean and cozy—overall, a great stay! ⛅ Sunset at the Roman Wall After settling in, our first stop was, of course, the Roman Wall! We arrived just in time for sunset—the golden light spilling over the stones was simply breathtaking, like a painting come to life. ⛪ Lugo Cathedral Next, we visited the Lugo Cathedral, a stunning 12th-century Gothic masterpiece. Its ancient stone walls whisper stories of time, standing grand and majestic in the heart of the city. 🍻 Tapas & Local Delights Following the hostel staff’s recommendation, we headed to Rua de Nova, a lively street full of tapas bars. It was Carnaval season, and the whole place was buzzing with energy! The staff at the bar were in full costume—even the waiters were dressed as police officers 🤣. We ordered Clara (lemon beer), along with zorza, croquetas, and huevo frito—each bite was incredible! Zorza, a Galician-style marinated spicy pork, was the highlight—we couldn’t resist ordering another round! 🎭 Carnaval Parade On our way back to the hostel, we stumbled upon the Carnaval parade, with the whole city alive in celebration. Yet under the night sky, the Roman Wall stood tall and unshaken, as if watching over the city and its people, filling us with a sense of peace. And just like that, our first day in Lugo came to a perfect end! Stay tuned for the second day’s adventures in my next vlog—don’t forget to follow! 🎥✨
