An implant supported denture is a type of denture that is supported by and attached to the implants which are placed in the mouth. A conventional denture rests on the gums. An implant supported denture is used when an individual does not have any teeth in the jaw but has sufficient amount of bone for the placement of implants. There are basically two types of implant supported dentures. It can be either the bar retained denture or the ball and socket retained denture. A bar retained denture is a thin metal bar hat is attached to 2 to 5 implants and then with the help of clips a denture is attached to these bars. A ball and socket kind of a denture is a denture where the implant has got a ball on top of it and the other attachment i.e. the socket is fitted on the under-surface of the denture. It is like a tich button where the denture has to be just fixed on top of these balls where it attaches and increases the retention and stability. Implant supported denture may last for a very long time. Nothing generally happens to the implant if general health and hygiene is taken care of. But the denture per se have to undergo some kind of maintenance like re-lining or re-basing or the change of the clips. So some kind of maintenance is required periodically.
