I’m restoring, racing, and road-tripping a 1988 C4 Corvette 35th Anniversary Edition in one year, and in this episode of Project C4, I uncover a major safety issue most Corvette owners overlook: the spare tire. This Corvette still had its original 35-year-old spare tire, and I break down why tire age matters more than tread, how old tires lose grip and structural integrity, and why ignoring your spare can leave you stranded — or worse. I also explain where the spare tire lives on a C4 Corvette, how to access it, what pressure it should be at, and why the C4 was the last Corvette generation with a real spare tire before run-flats. In the second half of the video, I analyze how rare the 35th Anniversary Corvette really is, using real auction data and the famous WWII German Tank Problem to estimate production numbers. We look at how many were built, how many had manual transmissions, and whether GM’s official numbers actually make sense. If you’re into C4 Corvettes, classic Corvette restoration, DIY car projects, automotive history, engineering logic, or data-driven car analysis, this video is for you. 👉 Check your spare tire 👉 Question the production numbers 👉 Subscribe for the rest of the Project C4 Corvette restoration series 00:00 Project C4 Overview & One-Year Challenge 01:15 Introduction to the 1988 C4 Corvette 35th Anniversary 02:00 Where the C4 Corvette Spare Tire Lives 03:20 Removing the Spare for the First Time 04:30 Why Old Tires Are Dangerous (Even with Tread) 06:00 Tire Age, Cracking, and Real-World Risk 08:10 Why You Should Check Your Spare Tire Today 09:40 Ordering a New C4 Corvette Spare Tire 11:00 C4 Corvette vs Run-Flat Tires (Why the Spare Disappeared) 12:45 What Makes the 35th Anniversary Corvette Special 15:30 Z52 vs Z51 Corvette Suspension Explained 18:00 Manual vs Automatic in the C4 Corvette 20:30 How Rare Is the 35th Anniversary Corvette? 23:15 Using the German Tank Problem to Estimate Production 27:00 Auction Data Results & Serial Number Analysis 30:00 How Many Manual 35th Anniversary Corvettes Exist? 33:00 Does Rarity Actually Matter? 35:00 What’s Next in the Restoration (Seats & Interior) #C4Corvette #1988Corvette #ProjectC4 #CorvetteRestoration #ClassicCorvette #CarRestoration
